Cape Winelands Airport
Cape Winelands Airport (CWA) is a privately-owned airport located in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa. It is situated approximately 13 kilometers northeast of the town of Durbanville.
The airport was originally built in 1943 for use by the South African Air Force. It was later transferred to the local municipality in the 1960s and sold to a private owner in 1993. In 2021, South African billionaire Rob Hersov announced his intention to buy the airport and turn it into a secondary aviation hub for Cape Town.
As of 2025, the airport is in the planning phases for redevelopment into an international commercial airport. The project is being driven by a consortium of aviation industry veterans, and is set to serve as Cape Town's second international airport upon completion. The planned improvements include a 3.5 km runway, a new passenger terminal capable of handling over 5 million passengers annually, and additional industrial, retail, and hospitality facilities. The airport aims to ease congestion at Cape Town International Airport and provide an alternate option for airlines and fuel planning.
The airport currently operates as a general aviation airfield, used for flight training, private flights, and emergency landings. It has two active runways and uncontrolled Class G airspace. Avgas 100LL fuel and W100 oil are available, and the airport charges landing fees based on aircraft mass. The airport is located in a more rural area compared to Cape Town International, with tall mountain ranges to the southeast.
